This quiet, unassuming oil guy from Houston showed up after hearing about the Death Ride from his daughter, Meghan Keedy. Charlie isn't a biker by FWBA standards. He's a runner who goes for a short spin with his wife every couple of weeks. This part will break your heart if you (like me) struggled to finish in spite of exhaustive training: Charlie rode all of Friday on a hybrid to be with his wife . . . and finished. Saturday, riding a too small road bike he borrowed from Meghan, he completed the 97 mile route into a headwind, even though Meghan had to sag due to a mechanical. For his finale, he rode Sunday on the hybrid once again to be with his beloved Peggy. That sounds like a feat some of the animals from FWBA like to pull, not some flatlander who shows up because his daughter told him about the great food.
